049 - HEPATITIS B Vaccination Camp by Don Bosco

28-January-2017, Antop Hill (Mumbai):
The Don Bosco Development Society (DBDS) in association with AMERICARES conducted a free Hepatitis B vaccination camp for the people of Antop Hill slums on 28th January 2017. More than 350 people benefited from this camp.

Fr Rolvin D’Mello (Executive Director of DBDS) along with Fr Savio D’Souza (Parish Priest and Rector of Antop Hill Church) inaugurated the camp. Fr Shekar and other some prominent local leaders were present too. The camp was organized in the Chapel of Vijay Nagar. Fr Rolvin, welcomed Frs. Savio and Shekar Mariadas and thanked them for making available the chapel available for this noble cause. He also thanked Dr. Devyesh Devaliya from AMERICARES for their support to this camp. Fr Rolvin specially thanked Mrs. Mary Fernandes (DBDS field staff) and SHG women for all the arrangements.

Hepatitis B is an infectious disease caused by the hepatitis B virus (HBV) which affects the liver. It can cause chronic liver disease and puts people at high risk of death from liver cirrhosis or cancer. Its vaccine is very costly but it was given free of cost to poor people from the slum.

According to WHO, an estimated 350 million individuals are infected with Hepatitis B worldwide. Large number of ladies, men, children and youth took vaccination in the camp. This will be followed by 2 more vaccine shots in future.
