079 - Free Eye Check-up Camp for the Underprivileged in Chinchwad

Chinchwad (Pune), May 2017:
The Don Bosco Development Society (DBDS), Chinchwad organized a free eye check-up camp for the people in Vidya Nagar slum (Chinchwad, Pune). 167 people (103 women, 60 Men and 4 children) benefited from this camp; which was held under the aegis of ‘Women Empowerment Project’ supported by AXA Business Services Pvt Ltd.

The objective of this camp was to detect eye disorders, refractive errors and create awareness on early detection of diseases and disorders related to eyes. The camp was organized in collaboration with H.V.Desai Hospital, Pune. Drs. Pravin Ranwade and Sharad Shinde examined the patients and six staff from AXA Business Services volunteered for the same. The six volunteers went out of their way to help in registration, arranging facilities, putting up banners, visiting slums and informing people about the eye camp and managing the crowd.

20 Cataract cases were identified in this camp. They were referred to H.V.Desai Hospital for Surgery. Those with refractive errors were distributed spectacles at a subsidized price of Rs 60 only. Mrs. Rajeshree Deshkhaire and Mrs. Vrushali Unhale (both staff – DBDS) who did the outreach for this camp were extremely happy to see people’s participation in the camp. They would follow-up with the hospital for further treatment of referred patients. The people of the slum thanked DBDS and AXA for conducting this camp.
