1195 Remedial Education in Mumbai: catering to more than 500 slum children

Matunga (Mumbai), November 2020: The Don Bosco Development Society (DBDS), Mumbai is conducting 20 online and offline remedial classes for 507 children from slums of Mumbai. Regular class are going on since July 2020 for the children are from Std I to VII. Teachers devote 2-3 hours daily to cover the prescribed syllabus. Children are taught in a child friendly, non-critical and non-threatening environment. Audio-visual aids such as charts, videos, models etc are used in teaching and records are kept to track the progress and learning achievements of every child.

Since July four meetings have been held with the teachers. These meetings were conducted by the Project Coordinator. During the meetings the Project Coordinator collected information on the progress and participation of children in class. She also checked the documents and gave her feedback on the same.

Twenty meetings were conducted with parents. The meetings were taken in the backdrop of COVID-19 pandemic infections in the slums of Mumbai and the strategies to continue education of children. During the meeting the Coordinator thanked the parents for their dedication, motivation and commitment to continue education of their children when they are facing many hardships due to COVID-19 pandemic. During the meeting, parents were educated on the guidelines given by education department, mandatory presence of parents with children during online classes, syllabus and evaluation of students. Parent’s feedback and their consent to continue the classes was taken from the parents.

Teacher’s training was held in November 2020. Twenty teachers and six staff members participated in this training. Mrs Surekha Pednekar was the resource person. She covered topics related to targets and objectives of remedial classes under the project, classroom management, teaching learning material, learning difficulties, etc.
