Vadodara (Gujarat), April 2021: The Don Bosco Development Society (DBDS) is reaching out to more than 500 slum children in the slums of Vadodara through its remedial education project. As part of this project DBDS organized online classes and offline classes for the children and capacity building training for the teachers working in these ‘Urban Slum Education Project’ which is aimed at assisting marginalized children; financially supported by Kindermissionswerk (Aachen, Germany).

a) Online and Offline Classes

In April 2021, there was unprecedented surge in COVID positive cases in Vadodara. Thousands of people in slums became victim of deadly COVID-19 virus. Every day the teachers took online classes for those children who had the facility of smart phone and offline (physical) classes for other students but with only a few students at a given time. Final evaluation exam was also taken by the teachers. The overall progress of students in view of the learning standards and outcome was assessed by teachers. The progress report was then discussed with parents.

b) Teacher’s Training under Urban Slum Education Project

Miss Jagruti Patil (DBDS - Coordinator) was the resource person. She started the session with taking stock of the children’s progress who were not able to attend online classes. She advised the teachers to undertake home visit and give home work and practical exercises in mathematics and language skills. In the second session she covered following topics in her session:

  • learning process in children

  • teaching methodology (audio-visual)
  • importance of parents meeting and feedback
  • importance of sports, cultural events, festivals etc
