30-August-2018, Koregaon Park (Pune): The Don Bosco Development Society (DBDS), Pune organized a Legal Awareness workshop for the Self-help Group (SHG) women from the Yeshwant Nagar slum in Pune. 24 women participated in this workshop held under the aegis of ‘Women Empowerment Project’ supported by Manos Unidas, Spain.

Mrs. Leena Gaikwad (Staff-DBDS) welcomed the participants and the resource person. Mr. Nagsen Chavan (Coordinator-DBDS) explained the objectives of the workshop. Advocate Dattatray Dhahinj was the resource person. Advocate Dhahinj introduced the participants to the concept of law, its meaning, importance and needs for law. He started with the past and present social status of women in Indian society, discrimination, taboos, customs etc.

In his session he explained the women’s rights in marriage, Property rights, Divorce, maintenance Act, Old age maintenance Act, Domestic violence, Inter caste Marriage Act, New amendments of women’s rights, the sexual harassment of women at, dowry Prohibition act, daughter’s rights in Hindu succession Act etc.

Various sections of IPC like 302, 420, 498(a), 375,376, 377, 354 etc were well explained to participants. Participants actively participated and asked question about their problems. The questions were all satisfactorily answered by the resource person. Program ended with vote of thanks by Ms. Ms. Nilima Chandhare (Trainer-DBDS). Mrs. Leena and Ms. Nilima did the mobilization of participants for this Legal training program.
