MUMBAI, MAR 10, 2019: Nearly 1300 women from the slums of Mumbai attended the annual International Women’s Day celebration, organised by Don Bosco Development Society (DBDS), at the sprawling Don Bosco Matunga campus on March 10. The day-long event was not only filled with fun, food and entertainment but also number of workshops on health, financial literacy, etc.

The DBDS team, headed by Father Rolvin D’Mello (Executive Director – DBDS) ensured that the women not only had a wonderful time but also enriching time with one another during the day. The Guests of Honour were Francesco Tagliabue, ErioBevilacqua and Daiella from the association of Auxilium India (Seregno, Italy) that has worked in conjunction with Don Bosco for more than a decade. The other dignitaries present were Father SavioSilveira (Vice Provincial), Fr Manuel Murzello (Provincial Economer), SuhaniMendonca from the Mendonca Foundation, and Mr JayeshChandan (President – Don Bosco Alunini).

After the sumptuous lunch, there was the dance competition for all the women who are part of the Self-Help groups of DBDS. This was truly the highlight of the day because apart from dance for entertainment; the women brought forth meaningful messages like: save a girl child, gender equality, save the planet, etc.

The day ended with a small surprise gift for all the women who participated in the event. Empowering women as a concept is noble but practical implementation is a challenge. DBDS has accepted this challenge and is working to give women the opportunity to make a difference.
